Tomorrowland Trekkers The Search for tomorrow's adventure starts today
When we were traveling through India we made a trip to one of the Unesco World Heritage Sites, Fetepur Sikri. We really had to fight with our driver to take us there because he indicated to us that the area was unsafe, but we pushed for it anyway. We enjoyed seeing the site, which had goats sitting along the steps and there were comparatively fewer people than in Agra. After we toured the site we spotted some little kids wandering back toward some rural villages and we decided to follow the same dirt path they walked. They seemed to notice us and made attempts to smile and speak to us briefly. The path we followed led us to a clearing with several goats, a distinct looking stone wall, and a stone slab on the ground. We were curious and wandered over to check out the area when we suddenly hear the voices of little kids shouting. We look over and see several young boys waving to get our attention. We stare confused. One boy said clearly, "Step on God!" We immediately realized in our zealousness to explore an unknown land, we mistakenly overstepped the cultural boundaries and stood on an apparent sacred altar. Our eyes were wide with realization as we scrambled to rectify our mistake and make a showing of apology to the children of the village. They seemed pretty amused by us. We were pretty embarrassed. Sometimes things are not always what they appear and differing cultural perspectives may mean the difference between seeing something as an abandoned rock or an active sacred site.
